This term our ICT focus is using WORD. We have learnt how to change the font type, size and colour, how to use the dictionary to check and fix our spelling and how to insert pictures and clip art. Last week we wrote some Acrosstic Poems describing ourselves. Here are a few...

In Room 12 we are learning to be role models and mentors to the junior syndicate children. Anyone who comes to our room for time out has a chat to some big Room 12 buddies about the school values and making good choices about their behaviour and learning. The big Room 12 buddies keep a special look out around the school and in the playground for their junior buddies.
At lunch time today Dylan, Tayla and Madasyn's dad came down to school with his Drifting car. They gave away leaflets about the Drifting national campionships on Sunday and wrist bands. Every family also got a free entry ticket to go on Sunday.
Today (Thursday 21 March) was International Race Relations Day. Race Relations Day marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is celebrated around the world. The 2013 theme is“My Dream for Aotearoa New Zealand…” Our school was encouraged to celebrate the value of cultural diversity and the need to support harmonious race relations. Race Relations Day is a time when you can do something to celebrate, learn, discuss, plan or promote diversity. South Hornby School decided to have a mufti day to celebrate all the colours of the world – we could either wear our Awhina group colour or cultural dress. The whole school went out onto the court to take a "rainbow" photo. On Wednesday afternoon all classes took part in a Team Building afternoon. Classes moved around the field and court areas taking part in various activities that involved working together. The Teachers had choosen activities that encouraged self development, positive communication, leadership skills and the ability to work closely together as a team to solve problems. Room 12 did 5 activities. First we did Tunnel Ball and we worked in our class groups. Next we did the Tower Building Challenge, where we worked in small teams to build the highest tower we could using the blocks in the hoop. The highest tower made was 61cm. Then we played Rob the Nest in our class groups. This was lots of fun. Three Legged Races were next, and we chose a buddy each and had a walking race first and then a running race. Our last activity was Island to Island. Each team had to get all its team to the other side without standing on the grass. Every time someone stood on the grass we had to go back and start again. What did we learn? We learnt that teams that co-operate with each other achieve more. What does TEAM stand for? Together Everyone Achieves More. Remember there is a free Mufti Day this Thursday for International Race Relations Day. Come along in your Awhina group colour or cultural dress if you have any.
This is one of our favourite songs to sing for Te Reo at the moment as we are learning how to greet people and ask them how they are. Each Friday Shane comes to school to teach the Middle and Senior Syndicate students Turbo Touch. We are getting pretty skilled at tapping the ball and running for the try line. Some us are so zippy that we hardly ever get touched. We also like playing Rats and Rabbits with Shane.
We have been singing this little Jack Johnson number as part of as Inquiry - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Have a listen and sing along!!
