On Friday South Hornby had a dress up day for Book Week. Everyone came to school dressed as a character from a book. We had a parade around the courts so everyone could see each class. The Awhina leaders chose 2 winning book characters from each class. It was lots of fun.

As part of our "googleable" learning 3 groups have discovered that their subject areas are similar. Temperature, Ozone Layer, and Ice. So, they got together to share their learning so far, and see if the other groups had anything that was helpful to them. Here they are in action: A huge thank you to Jeff for putting up the made-to-measure cardboard to block out the sunlight so we can use our data projector in the winter months when the shade sails are not up. They are going to make a big difference!! Thanks a million! On Friday we started finding out all the googleable stuff about different things in Antarctica. Mrs Jones put us in groups according to the things we were interested in from both the Mystery Box activity and the Brainstorming activity. We used the computers and the iPads to google everything we could about our area and took notes. We are learning to use bullet points to note down phrases rather than writing out everything we read. We are also learning to choose websites that have the information that we are looking for rather than ones that are no help to us. Our googleable topics are: Ice, Temperature, Penguins, Mt Erebus disaster, Ozone layer, Other Antarctic animals, Ice Axes. Here we are in action: We were lucky enough to go to the Antarctic Centre on Wednesday with the Middle Syndicate. We went to learn more about "life in the freezer" and Antarctica. Thank you to Krystal for being our parent helper, and thank you to the Red Cross for funding our trip, The "Mystery Box" was full of interesting items. When we pulled each item out we had to talk about what it was and how it might relate to "life in the freezer" or Antarctica. This term we are talking about "Life in the Freezer" and we know that we are going on a trip to the International Antarctic Centre. We had a big brainstorming session on 3 great big pieces of paper.
